The Sons of the American Revolution
frequently recognizes deserving members of the community who uphold the
values that this country was founded upon. They have many programs and
awards which are described below.
ROTC Program, Scholarship and Medal
The SAR awards the Silver Medal to deserving cadets in Collegiate
programs, as well as Bronze awards to those Cadets in the Jr. ROTC programs.

Outstanding
Citizenship Award
The Outstanding Citizenship Award is presented to deserving students
displaying the ideals of both character and citizenship.
Good
Citizenship Medal
The SAR awards the Bronze Good Citizenship Medal to individuals
who achieve a noteworthy achievement in their schools, community or state.
The Silver medal is awarded to service to the community or state. The Gold
Medal is awarded to the individual for unusual patriotic actions
of national importance.

The
Joseph S. Rumbaugh Historical
Oration Contest
An award presented to high school students for submission of an
oration in the participation of the Joseph S. Rumbaugh Orations Contest.
The medal comes in Gold, Silver and Bronze for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places
respectively. State and Chapter medal come in pewter, with the state suspension
ribbon in yellow, and chapter in buff.

Law
Enforcement Commendation
An award presented by the National Society; State Society; and Local
Chapters to persons who have served with distinction in law enforcement.
Fire
Safety Commendation
An award presented by the National Society; State Society, and Local
Chapters to persons in the field of fighting fire or prevention and life
saving.

Heroism
Medal
An award presented by either the State or the Local Chapters in
conjunction with a heroic deed.
Eagle
Scout Program and Scholarship
The State Society has an active Eagle Scout program, recognizing
the deserving Eagle Scout.

Flag
Certificates
Chapters recognizes the proper and correct flying of flags by various
members of the community in non business related ventures.

Naturalization Ceremony
The Chapter participates in four Naturalization Ceremonies
on the Third Floor Courtroom at
the U. S. Court House and Post Office in downtown Gainesville. Normally these are at
11:00am on Thursday mornings in February, March, April, June, May, August, October and
December. There
are approximately fifty (50) new citizens sworn in at each ceremony.

and Stella Knight Essay Contest
The Florida Society sponsors an essay contest among high school
student dealing with the theme of the American Revolution.

Americanism Elementary School
Poster Contest
This new contest will be directed at students in the 4th
or 5th grades, depending on which grade year the American Revolution
is taught in their educational system. The National Society
Elementary School Poster Contest will stimulate interest in American History in
support of the Fourth or Fifth Grade Curriculum.

Tom & Betty Lawrence American History Teacher Award
The National Society of the Sons of the American
Revolution, whose mission and objectives are patriotic, historical, and
educational, wish to identify, recognize, and commend Outstanding Social Studies
Teachers. These extraordinary educators at private, public, and
parochial institutions, who teach our children in a middle or high school
setting, will be recognized for actively addressing the history of the American
Revolutionary era.

Chapter Challenge
The President General’s State Society & Chapter Activities
Competition Award
This award was initiated in 1978
(revised 2003), for chapters or state societies that compete for the award by
accumulating points awarded for various program activities. The reporting period
for this competition is January 1,
through December 31 of the previous year. Total points for a participating
chapter or society should be reported by
email or mail to the Americanism Committee Chairman and Executive Director not
later than February 1st. This
form must be completed for this competition. Supporting
documentation may be asked for, if needed.
Awards will recognize the most active state societies and/or most active
chapters. Four first place awards for
Chapter will be offered by membership size groups: 1 to 49, 50 to 99, 100 to
199, over 200, and four first place
awards for States: 1 to 199; 200 to 499, 500 to 999, over 1000 members. The
State categories sizes1-199, 200-499,
500 to 999 & 1000+ members will be judged using weighted equation on a per
member basis. A President General’s
Streamer is awarded to the winner of each Chapter and State category. Award may
not be won for two consecutive
years. An Honorable Mention Streamer may possibly be awarded at the discretion
of the Americanism Committee.
These awards are presented by the National Society at an Annual
Congress for the most complete SAR program.
Activities should conform to the chartered purposes and to the type of activity
suggested in the SAR Handbook.
